EmailHarry and Joyce Barnhurst tag team as the youth directors of the LYM501 Youth Mnistry at Lehman. Harry and Joyce have been married for 26 years and surprisingly still like each other. All kidding aside, they are proud parents of two young women who are currently attending college. Harry and Joyce have been youth leaders for 12 years; that ministry started with one simple question..."Would you consider helping out with Youth Group?" As it turned out, they answered "yes." Harry and Joyce's enthusiasm for youth ministry is based in Matthew 22:37-39: He said to him, ' “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” '
LYM501, Lehman's weekly youth group geared towards 6th-12th graders, is a place where youth can connect into the whole of life together, a place where the authentic person can find freedom of expression, and is a place that strives to encourage honesty, trust, responsibility, and accountability. LYM501 youth have a sacred and safe place for questioning, contemplation, and introspection to occur, without fear of judgment or embarrassment. The group also offers many activities for fun and fellowship.
Harry and Joyce believe they are here to help youth define and grow their faith; to give them a place to take what they have learned in Sunday School, Worship, Bible Studies, and other church events and figure out what "church" means to them and how they can incorporate it into their life.
