Jeremiah Ben Hilkiah
Prophet of the Three Dog Night
A Sermon Series for September 2016
Ever had a “three dog night?” It's an expression of the Chukchi people of Siberia, who said the coldest Siberian nights require three dogs for warmth. Jeremiah son of Hilkiah, the second of the major prophets, after Isaiah and before Ezekiel, had a prophetic vocation scared by a life of “three dog nights” of bitterly cold loneliness, lamentation, and long-suffering. God called Jeremiah to prophesy Jerusalem’s imminent destruction because the people had turned away, worshiped false deities, thus broke covenant with God. Of Jeremiah God promised, “They will fight you, but they will not break you.” Jeremiah lived to see and lament Israel’s temple destroyed and the people shipped off in exile. Over four Sundays in September, Pastor Nancy and Pastor Bill will preach from the Book of Jeremiah, proclaiming its poetry and prose to reassure you that, though the world may press in to fight you, you will not be broken, but rescued by the love of God.
